Gi is an actual model, you guys—these gorgeous photos are from her own website which “is dedicated to the informed, practical, impactful, and modern lady”. It’s the absolutely perfect description for Gi, who has a variety of interests and talents, including ethical and sustainable fashion. I can’t wait for you to hear more from her and her heart!

Tell me a little about yourself? Who are you, where are you from / living, etc?

“Hi! My name is Gi—you can find me on various platforms under “thesensiblefay.” I’m a Taiwanese-American woman living in Queens, NY.

I was born and raised in NY, went to school in Boston, lived in Nashville for a bit, and have recently moved back to the city! I currently work as a digital marketer and am striving to find the balance between results/creativity as well as personal joy/professional success.”

How did you first get into ethical / sustainable fashion?

“Looking back at it, I think a lot of principles that tie into sustainable fashion were instilled in me as a child. My parents are immigrants from Taiwan and I grew up in an environment where they consumed thoughtfully and used everything for as long as they could.

The conscious commitment to ethical/sustainable fashion started about a year ago when I realized that my style blog didn’t have a direction and I wanted to leave a positive impact on this Earth.”

What’s something you really want other people to know about ethical / sustainable fashion?

“It goes beyond just fashion. It’s tied to so many other industries and issues—the environment, human rights, equality, representation, etc. Additionally, ethical/sustainable fashion is a spectrum and I think it’s important adapt a system that works sustainably for your lifestyle. There’s no right answer. Do your research.”

Who are your inspirations (ethical fashion or otherwise)?

“Recently, I’ve been drawing a lot of inspiration from women of color, specifically women who look like me. Representation is a hot topic in industries such as tech and business and the ethical/sustainable fashion space should be no different.

Within the ethical fashion realm, I love Kamea Chayne (@kameachayne), host of the Green Dreamer Podcast; Cat (@cookiecat.herine) from restitchstance; and Terra (@gratefullyterra) for fitted looks and representation over 40!

Conceptual and artistic accounts also boost my creativity and push me to look at clothing in a different light. @fongminliao is a painter with a clean and luxurious aesthetic; @homeless_handmade for creative poses and interesting mood boards; and @ruba, the creative director of Revlon for juxtaposition and composition.”

Do you have any ethical brands you’d recommend or tips for how to find great thrifted pieces?

“I’ve only really been in the sustainable fashion industry for about a year and haven’t had the chance to try out many ethical brands yet—most of my focus has been on making the best of my existing closet.

One of my biggest thrifting tips is to keep an open mind and be playful when browsing for pieces. Try everything on but don’t worry too much if it doesn’t fit properly. If it’s a unique piece that you LOVE, you can likely get it tailored for your body.

Be careful of quality and definitely check for any stains/broken seams/injuries that an article of clothing might have. As awful as it sounds, I’ve noticed that upper-class neighborhoods tend to have pieces of higher quality that will last you for longer (but the tradeoff might be price).

Last but not least, only buy something if you really LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it.”

What is one of your current favorite items of clothing you own?

“I recently dug a yellow, short-sleeved, turtleneck shirt out of my mom’s closet. It’s (probably) from the 80s and since that decade (and yellow) are trends that are MAJOR right now, this season is the perfect opportunity for it to have a second life!”

What are you reading, listening to and/or watching right now?

“I’m currently reading ‘The Secrets of Six-Figure Women’ and ‘Owning Your Own Shadow’. It’s interesting to hear from successful women and to see how varied their paths have been. ‘Owning Your Own Shadow’ is an exploration of the dark side of the human psyche. While it’s been helpful in putting my personal darkness in perspective, the author makes a lot of religious references and it can get pretty tedious.

What I’m really looking for is a juicy fantasy/fiction book to dig my hands into so I guess I’ll have to settle for a fantasy show instead! I’m re-watching all of Game of Thrones!”

Where can we find you?

“You can find me at thesensiblefay.com. I post every Sunday! Additionally, I’m on Instagram @thesensiblefay and on lookbook/pinterest/facebook under the same user.”
